Anubhav Sinha directed the Bollywood drama Thappad. Taapsee Pannu plays the lead in the film. Thappad is about a married couple who appear to have an easy relationship until an unexpected slap changes everything. Pavail Gulati and Dia Mirza also play pivotal parts in the film.

Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) is an 'Adarsh Patni,' a woman who starts her day by giving tea to her husband and then leading him to his car to give him his cash and packed lunch as he drives off to work. She's also an 'Adarsh bahu,' tasked with monitoring her mother-in-blood law's sugar levels and overseeing the kitchen. She squeezes in time to have a cup of herbs-infused black tea and teach classical dancing to her next-door neighbor's kid in between her daily routine.

Amrita's husband Vikram (Pavail Gulati), who is about to receive a major promotion at work, throws a party at their home one day. When he misdirects his anger over an unexpected turn of circumstances, he slaps his wife in front of all the visitors, things got violent. Amrita is shattered by her public humiliation. When the 'fateful slap' is dismissed as 'Ek thappad hi toh hai,' she chooses to take a stance for her damaged dignity and leave her 'loveless' marriage.
